1. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006

The MSMED Act, 2006, is the cornerstone legislation for MSMEs in India. It provides the legal framework for the classification, registration, and development of MSMEs. The Act aims to facilitate the promotion and development of MSMEs and enhance their competitiveness.

2. Goods and Services Tax (GST)

GST is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services. MSMEs with an annual turnover exceeding a specified limit must register for GST and comply with its provisions, including regular filing of GST returns.

3. Income Tax Act, 1961

MSMEs are required to comply with the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This includes filing annual income tax returns, maintaining proper books of accounts, and paying advance tax based on estimated annual income.

4. Companies Act, 2013

For MSMEs registered as companies, compliance with the Companies Act, 2013, is mandatory. This includes provisions related to annual filings, board meetings, financial statements, and corporate governance.

5. Factories Act, 1948

MSMEs operating factories must comply with the Factories Act, 1948. This Act governs various aspects of factory operations, including health, safety, and labor laws.

6. Shops and Establishment Act

The Shops and Establishment Act regulates the working conditions of employees in shops and commercial establishments. MSMEs must register under this Act and comply with its provisions, which vary from state to state.

7. Foreign Trade Policy (FTP)

The Foreign Trade Policy outlines the regulatory requirements for MSMEs engaged in export activities. It includes provisions related to export promotion schemes, incentives, and compliance with international trade regulations.

8. Environmental Laws

MSMEs must comply with various environmental laws and regulations, including the Environment Protection Act, 1986, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. These laws mandate measures to control pollution and ensure sustainable business practices.

9. Labor Laws

MSMEs must adhere to various labor laws, including the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Act, 1952, and the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Act, 1948. These laws ensure social security and welfare benefits for employees.

10. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)

MSMEs are encouraged to protect their innovations and creations through intellectual property rights. This includes patents, trademarks, and copyrights, which provide legal protection and promote innovation.
